Њему су се дивили само они који су могли да наслуте лепоте које су лежале у основи песниковог пада, а мрзели су га они који су у њему видели разузданог циника, а у његовој поезији ништа више но разврат. Ипак, он је својим песмама одредио значај европске поезије модерног доба.</span></p>

Он се обраћа читаоцу читаоцу који је дволичан, немоћан и развратан, баш као и песник сам. Обраћа му се, јер је свестан да га читалац не разуме, заправо, да га нико не разуме. У овој песми доминирају мрачне и туробне слике, попут пропадања и помамних звери, црва, шакала, змија, које симболизују чамотињу и порок.</p>

Кроз њу сазнајемо о ништавности света и пролазности живота, али и о узалудном човековом трагању и залагању. Схвативши шта је боље, песник одлази у ирационални свет смрти, откривајући ново и непознато.</p>
